Institute for Community Living Announces New Medical Director for Psychiatry Education and Special Initiatives

Dr. Hunter McQuistion, a Preeminent Community Psychiatrist with More Than 4 Decades of Experience in the Field, Joins Institute for Community Living to Oversee Teaching, Supervision, and an Assertive Community Treatment Mobile Rehabilitation Team

(New York, N.Y.)—Today, the Institute for Community Living (ICL), a nonprofit organization that supports New Yorkers with behavioral health challenges live healthy and fulfilling lives by providing comprehensive housing, health care, and recovery services, announced Dr. Hunter McQuistion as the new Medical Director for Psychiatry Education and Special Initiatives.

Dr. McQuistion is a preeminent community psychiatrist who has been practicing in the public sector for 40 years. He has held numerous clinical and executive roles at academic medical centers, government agencies, and community-based organizations. Dr. McQuistion will lead an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team in the Bronx and will more broadly support the continuum of care at ICL by advancing teaching in the supervision of psychiatric providers at the agency.

ACT is one of ICL’s extensive network of mobile treatment programs, which work to support the hardest-to-reach and hardest-to-treat individuals in New York City. The mobile programs are part of a continuum of care that supports adults, children, families, and seniors with a wide range of mental health needs, substance use disorders, and intellectual and developmental disabilities.

After completing residency training in psychiatry at NYU-Bellevue and a Fellowship in Public Psychiatry at Columbia, Dr. McQuistion began his career serving as Medical Director for Psychiatric Rehabilitation at Mount Sinai Hospital. During the 1990s, he was the Medical Director for Project Renewal, Inc., and then Chief Medical Officer for the Division of Mental Hygiene at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. He later served as the Director of the Division of Outpatient & Community Psychiatry at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center. From 2013 to 2022, he was the Chief of the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Health for Gouverneur Health, NYC Health + Hospitals, after which he served as Medical Director for the Enhanced Treatment and Recovery (EnTRy) Program at NYU Langone.

Dr. McQuistion has held academic appointments at Columbia, Mount Sinai, and NYU. He has served on the Editorial Board of several major psychiatric publications, including Psychiatric Services. He has been published widely in book chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles focusing on public and community psychiatry and person-centered rehabilitation services. Dr. McQuistion has chaired multiple committees of the American Psychiatric Association and is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
